1:30 am
i'm jessica melcher live on campus....r last sunday two sjsu students were robbed at gunpoint on campus. i'll have a live report. who will control the s-j-s-u student union? president qayoumi will join us live. the spartans reached out to the victims of the boston marathon bombings. update news starts now. hello and welcome to update news... im kate loewen.
1:31 am
and i'm victor guzman... thanks for joining us. university police are still looking for the two men who they say committed an armed robbery on campus. jessica melcher is live on campus with the report. jessica? thanks. there has been some concern on campus since the robbery occurred early sunday morning right in the campus village quad... " the robbery occurred at around four a-m when two male suspects pointed a gun at the victims and demanded their cell phones, wallets and cash. they then fled northbound. an s-j-s-u alert informed students of the incident and since then, some students have felt less safe living on campus. "it's not surprising. we always get robberies or someone getting pointed at a gun [sic someone's always in danger on this campus, and it makes me feel uncomfortable due to the fact that there's a police station right there." there have been nine robbery cases over the past year: four completed and five attempts. university police ensure that they do all that they can to keep students safe, but sergeant john laws advises students to always look out for each other.
1:32 am
we also ask that the students call us if they see anything suspicious. we would much rather go out and find out that it was a false alarm than to find out later or after something had happened that someone had seen it and didn't want to waste our time.. we can't be in call places at all times but we do try to provide as much resources for the university community as we can." students are advised to travel in groups at night and to stay in well lit-areas. they should educate themselves about the safety resources and utilize them at any time of day to help prevent future incidents like this from occurring. live on campus, i'm jessica melcher, update news. there is a planned student protest next week that has to do with president mohammad qayoumi's upcoming budget proposal. " with the fiscal year ending, president qayoumi will propose a new budget on monday, aprill 22, that has been speculated by the associated students to include a super auxiliary plan. president qayoumi implemented a similar plan during his career as president of csu east bay. this would mean that the associated students, student union, spartan shops, tower foundation, and the research foundation auxiliaries could merge to minimize expenses in areas like human resources, accounting, and
1:33 am
audits. but what the associated students board of directors want sjsu students to realize is that this would not allow the newly remodeled student union to be governeed by a student run government. calvin: it's a little concerning for me that the student union is on the table. it's something that the students have built from the ground up since 1963. we've paid for it, all with our own money, and it's been run by students ever since. the board of directors is planning a protest termed 'impact day' on this coming monday. mykel: it will be a good message to the president to tell him, 'hey, we're here, we're listening, and we don't like what you're doing." as a-s president, calvin worsnup is leaving office this semester wishing that president qayoumi had been more open in involving their opinions when he formed the spring 2013 task force that analyzed the exisiting auxiliaries. calvin:
1:34 am
i appreciate what the president is trying to do; we do have redundancies that can make our operation more efficient, but i think there's better ways to go about it that are more transparent, more inclusive, and even better that will keep the intention of our predecessors as students to have it be a student run entity." and with us here live on set is president qayoumi. thank you so much for joining us president, we are so excited to have you here.

congresswomen eshoo says the post office is fitting for ballard's dedication because it is a public building where thousands of letters and packages are processed for soldiers." the nation has come together in mourning in the wake of the tragic boston marathon bombing. update news' chris chandler took a look at how san jose state students have reacted. " the 117th annual boston marathon was marred by deadly blasts this week, as two improvised explosive devices detonated, killing three, and wounding scores of people. "nat sound "explosion" among the dead was martin richard, an eight year old boy. president obama addressed the nation from boston, offering strength and support to those affected.
1:42 am
"as you begin this long journey of recovery, your city is with you, your commonwealth is with you, your country is with you, we will all be with you as you learn to stand and walk, and yes, run again. of that i have no doubt, you will run again." standup: among the more than twenty five thousand participants, many parts of the world were represented, including here at san jose, which produced at least fifty runners, including s-j-s-u kinesiology professor matthew bejar, who is thankfully not listed among the dead or wounded. to answer the call for aid, many of san jose state's assorted fraternities and sororities organized within twenty four hours of the tragedy to raise money for relief efforts. "it could have happened to any of u. we all put on relays, we all put on similar events, like, we would not want something like that to happen at an event that we throw." rather than work in competition with one another, fraternities and sororities have worked together for the greater good. "and even though there's different fraternities out here raising money, we're all out here for the same cause, because at the end of the day, we're all greek brothers, and we all wanted to make the world a better place." efforts like these will continue, as the city of boston and the rest of the nation learn to heal. on campus, i'm chris chandler, update news"

1:44 am

"it's something that did happen and that's why i guess i live my life everyday to be better than what i was." professor of education of psychology, roxana marachi, says cyberbullying is more difficult to track because it is anonymous... the words of dr martin luther king jr come to s-j-s-u for a momentous anniversary. the book is closing on a 55 year old s-j-s-u landmark. what does it mean to students? but first we ask students what they are going to do with their tax refunds. " with my tax refund i am going to pay off my credit card. i am going to go see my boyfriend in dc and i'm probably going to do a little bit of shopping. so with my refund check i'm going to use it to pay off my books that i used with my credit card. i don't work so i don't get a tax refund. if i had one i would probably use it for lunch. i'm just planning to save it up for next semester because i'm always short on money. so i'm just going to use that towards either pay tuition or housing. i currently don't work right
1:46 am
now but if i were to get tax return money i would spend it on clothes and more food around campus. no, i didn't get one but i also didn't have to pay anything but i kind of was doing it with my dad. so i think he claimed me and i fell like he said that since he is claiming me i couldn't do it." a fifty-five year source for s-j-s-u students' educational needs is coming to an end. " -nat sound: cash regsiter- robert's bookstore is located on tenth street, close to east san carlos. however robert's bookstore says they will have to close its doors by may 31st because it can't afford an increase in the lease. "karen ries, co-owner. t the industry's changing so fast. we've gone along with the changes, i mean we've gone to selling books online, we've gone to renting books, we've been through all of it and it just is changing a lot. there's so many other alternatives, so many other ways students can get books and it's just...it's time for us to move on." robert's bookstore has been apart of the history of
1:47 am
s-j-s-u providing students with books and supplies at discount prices. it also is one of the only bookstores to sell items for fraternities and sororities. "danthy hong, business management sophomore i was really shocked because it's been here since i started coming here, and even before coming here to san jose state. since i joined like a greek organization i've been coming here to get paddles and like stuff for it to make for like the stuff for the fraternity that i'm in" current employees at the bookstore are also upset. jasmin haro, sociology alumnusi it was just sad to hear that they are closing, and i know a lot of students come here because we are cheaper than on campus. and i know it's going to affect greek, cuz we get most of the customers are from local schools, because we're the only school in the bay area that carries greek supplies. r robert's bookstore co-owner says she doesn't know what will happen to the future of robert's bookstore. karen ries, co-owner i'm not really sure. it'll take me still another six months or so to close out all of the bookkeeping and everything. another door will open, i'm sure of it. though i've done this since i was in my...god, my teens."
1:48 am
as for what's going to go up in the current robert's location? that remains to be seen. and now we go to ryan silipan for arts and entertainment....ryan? thanks victor lets get to it. san jose state's greek community is trying to become more eco-friendly. update news elizabeth olveda reports on the green steps these fraternity and sorority houses are taking. " san jose state fraternities and sororities are going green. ácemoneá senior environmental studies major christian gutierrez created a competition to determine which greek house is the most environmentally friendly. "this is kind of a sense, for me, being my senior year, i wanted to give back to the community that helped me to be where i am today."
1:49 am
his group, or the "greenest greek squad" measure the different houses' energy, natural gas and water consumption by checking their smart meters. halfway through the six week long competiton, the ggs does a "walk through" where they advise the organizations what improvements need to be made to get ahead. "it just gives them an idea of like, 'oh i can save electricity here. and in the long run it doesnt just save the greek, or that sorority or fraternity money but it'll actually help reduce overall co2 emissions." the team educates the houses by offering energy-saving tips through twitter, facebook and brochures. gutierrez has the support of the associated students and sjsu's environmental resource center and the competition will be held every year. the winning greek house will be awarded on earth day during the intermission of sjsu's trashion fashion event. on campus, elizabeth olveda, update news." there's construction under way in san jose...and the workers have four legs. update news reporter ashley cunha hiked along the guadalupe river to find out more.
1:50 am
" [open with nat sound : that's right! beavers have moved into san jose. experts say this furry family of three has migrated from the santa cruz mountains to the guadalupe river park in the heart of downtown. these videos were shot by nature photographer and san jose state graduate greg kerekes. he has been monitoring the beaver activity for the past few weeks with a nightvision camera set up near the river bank. sjsu environmental studies professor lynne tulio is excited to see the animals in our city. trulio:"beavers are one of the world's great animal engineers. they build dams and they completely change the hydrology of areas. and, uh, our ecosystems are adapted to what beavers do." cunha: the last time beavers inhabited the santa clara county was in 1855, well over 150 years ago. s so to have them back here at the guadalupe river, what does this mean for our ecosystem? trulio:"i really worry about the beavers in the context of all the trash that comes down our streams during the wintertime."" "they're finding conditions that are suitable to them. which is really great to know." a according to martinezbeavers.org, the guadalupe beavers are "a symbol of the slow but steady environmental recovery of san francisco bay" despite the decades of pollution, showing mother nature's resilliance in our area. e experts also say theres is a possiblity that the beaver pictured here could be a pregnant female, which means a whole new population of beavers could call san jose their home for years to come.
1:51 am
at the guadalupe river park in san jose, i'm ashley cunha. update news." in her continuing effort to find unique classes at san jose state unversity, update news reporter tracy hinson found a course that involves drinking. but she had to go off campus to experience the full effects of this class. it is no surpirse that hospitality-recrecation- tourism- management 148 or wine appreciation is a highly sought after class. "after enrollment begins, the class fills up in about six hours, it is pretty crazy. and i always have a wait list of about 45 students." student's who think this class will be just glasses up are in for a bitter experience. "a lot of people come in thinking you're just gonna come and drink wine and its going to be happy go lucky time, but it's most definitely a real class... there's quizzes, there's presentations, there's assignments, you do have to learn a lot." and the hardest part of wine appreciation... "you really question what you can actually taste and smell when you go into this actually class cause you are expected to know different scents and taste." the class culminates in a field trip, which allows students to see the reality of the wine business. "really we are in the hospitality business here, we are always entertaining people and so you know hopefully they get a glimpse
1:53 am
of real life use of what they learning." with weekly tastings and a wine field trip, you'd think you would have to be 21 for this class. "i have had people under 21 that did not participate in the tastings, you know it's kinda like..the book's not scratch-n-stiff." here at jason-stephen's winery as part of a san jose state wine appreciation field trip and i'm standing in a wine tank, this is where the wine ferments. at jason- stephen's winery i'm tracy hinson." and that's all for arts and entertainment.....back to you guys. tuesday marked the 50th anniversary of martin luther king jr. writing the "letter from birmingham jail." countless locations worldwide celebrated this anniversary with a reading of the letter. s-j-s-u's own m-l-k library hosted one such reading to spread awareness.
1:54 am
some of the speakers included the dean of trinity cathedral in downtown san jose, the president of silicon valley's naacp and even sjsu's own professors. the letter discusses issues such as the difference between just and unjust laws, racism, and how to defeat it in a nonviolent manner. this was the first time the mlk library hosted the reading. one san jose state golfer earned western athletic player of the week. and we now know who the spartans will be playing in the mountain west football conference. but first we ask students how their allergies are affecting them. " "my eyes get all watery, and i start to sneeze a lot. i get the sniffles. people think i have a cold. and they try to give me tissues because they think i'm sick, but i'm really not. it's just allergies." "pretty bad. i get, like, stuffy, and my eyes burn, and sometimes i get headaches." "well i actually don't have
1:55 am
any allergies, and i'm guessing if i were to have allergies, it would just be, like, pretty bad." "well allergy kind of sucks when you're in class, you just be sneezing every minute or so, and if you're pretty quiet during class you'll hear, like, people sniffling the whole time." "spring allergies have never hit me, so not now. but who knows, they develop. my mom, she developed them. i could follow in her footsteps, i don't know." "it's usually the worst in classes, because i always have to get up and go to the bathroom to blow my nose, or i'm just sniffling the whole time so it's pretty annoying."" the associated students board of directors is getting tech savvy in an effort to garner more student opinion from across campus using a social media site called reddit. reddit, known as "the front page of the internet," acts like an interactive forum that displays relevant and ordered content based from users upvoting its popularity or by down voting it lower in the search results.
1:56 am
ááá " any clarifications that students wanted or needed, they had the answers available to them on the spot." the board of directors conducted an "ama," or "ask me anything" post format to address questions or concerns students had over money spent from the a-s budget. the board annually decides how to spend the six point five million dollar budget allocated towards student services that are funded from student fees. and now we go to tracy hinson to find out what is happening in sports. thanks kate. here's what's happening in sports. san jose state senior golfer jennifer brumbaugh was named the western athletic conference women's golfer of the week for april fifteenth-through-the twenty-first. brumbaugh, recorded her second top-1o finish of the season as she finished in a tie for ninth-place at the fresno state lexus classic at the ford washington country club. brumbaugh carded a seven-over-par score of two-twenty-three in the

" i'm real excited about the 2013 mountain west conference football schedule. i think it brings a sense of renewed rivalries back between san jose state and fresno state. also, san jose state and san diego state, being now a conference game instead of a non-conference game."
1:58 am
